Biographical / Historical

The Republican Action League was founded by Bridgeport Republicans in 1969. As per their leadership guide, they cite the charter revision committee's mostly Democratic composition, as well as a sense of one-party domination in the city. As such, their goals were to expand the party base in the city, as well as rebuke then party leader A. Edward Sandula.

Nicholas Panuzio (Mayor, 1971-1975) and Hames Stapleton were the original co-chairs of the organization and were active throughout the group's lifespan. They focused much of their efforts in Bridgeport's various districts to get Republican support, and hopefully elect Republicans to the state government, with mixed success.

They printed handouts and ran meetings, campaigned against the existing party machinery, and were an active political force.

It is unclear when the group disbanded.
