Biographical / Historical
The Pankiewicz family lived in Milford, Connecticut, running a farm in the area that is now along Wheeler's Farm Road. Two of their sons, John Joseph (1916-1993) and Anthony Peter (1907-1972), served in World War II.
John, born on June 14, 1916, served in the Air Force. Following that, he worked in plastics at Sikorsky Aircraft before retiring in 1981. He died on August 8, 1993.
Anthony was born on August 15, 1907. He served in the army during the second World War. When he returned to Milford, he worked as a carpenter until he died unexpected on November 3, 1972.
Scope and Contents
While the collection contains some World War II related documentation, including official paperwork, scant personal notes, and printed ephemera, the collection's strength lies in the photographs from the late 1930s and into 1957. The World War II years document not only John's and Anthony's time in camp and over in the European theater of war, but also the family's farming life in Milford. The juxtaposition provides valuable insight into the home front from a farming perspective, as well as the equipment and animals kept.
Arrangement
All material is arranged chronologically. Series I contains World War II documents, series II contains photographs, and series III contains pre- and post-war documents related to life in Milford, Connecticut.
