Abstract:
The Bridgeport Commission on the Arts and the Bridgeport Arts Council were separate but similar entities that came out of a greater investment in arts education in the 1970s. They should not be confused with the Bridgeport Cultural Arts Center, although all three were a part of the same movement. The records of Judith Muniec provide insight into the organizations during their time of operation.

Biographical / Historical

Judith Muniec was born in Bridgeport and graduated from Barnard College in New York City. She worked at the Bridgeport Post, and would go on to become the Community Relations Director at the Bridgeport Public Library. Victor E. Muniec, who also worked at the Bridgeport Post, was her husband. Judith moved to Washington DC later in her career, working first at Panuzio Associates and then with Synectics for Management Decisions, Inc. In both locations she was active in the local community. She died in 2009.

The Bridgeport Commission on the Arts and the Bridgeport Arts Council were separate but similar entities that came out of a greater investment in arts education in the 1970s. They should not be confused with the Bridgeport Cultural Arts Center, although all three were a part of the same movement. The Bridgeport Commission on the Arts was a part of the larger Connecticut Commission on the Arts, from which the former received funding to manage programing within the community. The Bridgeport Arts Council appears to be the action arm that implemented the money from the Bridgeport and Connecticut Commissions.
