Biographical / Historical
Isabella Maude Winton-Cady Warner, most commonly known as Maude Cady Warner, was born on July 1, 1867 to Robert Cady an France August Cady Winton. It is unclear at this time how Maude came to the United States or how she met her husband, DeVer Warner. Indeed, precious little is known about her personal life, beside the fact that she was an active member of the Fairfield Garden Club and served as its president for a great many years.
DeVer Warner was the son of Ira DeVer Warner, one of the co-founders of the Warner Brothers Company. The undergarment manufacturer based in Bridgeport was one of the city's biggest employers, and the profits from the company allowed DeVer, Maude, and their three children – DeVer Cady, Bradford Greenman and Margaret (later Margaret Field) – to live in luxury.
Maude Warner died August 14, 1931. No obituary can be located at this time.
Scope and Contents
The material in the collection is primarily bills, focused on home, flowers, and groceries. This is especially true for material relating to the Burr homestead. Maude's tax returns are also included, giving a sense of her personal wealth and the wealth from her husband, DeVer.
This collection of material helps to demonstrate what the expectations and duties of a woman of Maude's wealth and status were, as well as how homes were run in the late 1920s, especially after the stock market crash and the Great Depression began.
